My first solo trip to London as a woman: Why booking a local female Greeter changed everything
Traveling solo as a woman can be empowering, but when it’s your first time going overseas, it also comes with nerves, questions, and very real safety concerns.
My name is Estephani, and I’m a solo female traveler from Mexico. I’ve traveled alone before, but only within my own country. This trip to London was different. It was my first time in Europe, my first overseas trip, and my first time being completely alone so far from home.
I was excited, of course. Visiting London had always been a dream of mine. 💜 But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. Coming from Mexico, safety awareness is something I carry with me every single day. Even though I knew London was generally safer, the idea of getting lost, navigating a new culture, dealing with short days (I couldn’t believe the sun was setting at about 4 PM!), and being alone in a completely different country made me anxious.
That’s when I decided to book a Greeter.
Why I Chose to Book a Greeter in London
I didn’t want a traditional tour. I didn’t want something rushed, scripted, or overly touristy. I also didn’t want to rely only on Google or TikTok recommendations that may or may not be authentic.
What I wanted was simple. I wanted someone local. Someone I could trust. Someone who knew the city beyond the highlights and could help me understand where to start, how to move around, and what to expect.
Booking a Greeter gave me that sense of security even before I arrived and who was connected to me before I traveled there to myGreeter, Martina, ahead of time. We chatted about what I wanted to see, my interests, and what mattered most to me. She shared transportation tips, cultural expectations, and small details that made me feel more prepared.
Meeting My Greeter and Letting Go of the Fear
Martina (Greeter) & Estephani (Traveler)
I’ll be honest. I’m shy and introverted. Before meeting Martina, I worried it might feel awkward.
Instead, it felt natural almost immediately.
She suggested a smart meeting point so we could make the most of our time together. She was friendly, calm, and incredibly easy to talk to. Very quickly, she felt less like a guide and more like a friend.
She made me feel so comfortable. It was beyond my expectations.
We spent 2.5 hours together on each of the two days I booked, and those days completely shaped how I experienced London.
Martina (Greeter) & Estephani (Traveler)
My Greeter didn’t just show me places. She helped me experience them.
One of my biggest interests was London’s music scene, especially anything related to The Rolling Stones and classic British music. Martina took me to places I never would have found on my own.
We walked through Denmark Street, explored neighborhoods rich with musical history, and visited the Rolling Stones store in Carnaby Street. She even took me to a Beatles store (I didn’t even know existed!) so I could buy souvenirs for my dad.
She helped me take photos and videos in the best spots, suggested angles, and made sure I actually enjoyed the moment instead of worrying about capturing it.
The Royals, Timing, and Avoiding the Crowds
I’m also fascinated by the British Royals, and seeing Buckingham Palace was high on my list. What I didn’t know was that the Changing of the Guard only happens on specific days and at specific times.
Martina did.
She suggested the perfect time for us to meet so I could see it without getting stuck in overwhelming crowds. She knew exactly where to stand to get the full experience while avoiding the chaos.
That kind of local timing made all the difference.
Notting Hill, Vintage Markets, and Movie Moments
Notting Hill was another must for me. I wanted the colorful houses, the shopping, and the movie locations.
Martina took me through vintage markets, and helped me find the famous Notting Hill shopping bag. She even gave me more affordable options, though I ended up choosing the more expensive one because it felt special to me.
It felt like discovering the city with someone who genuinely cared about what I loved.
The Practical Help I Didn’t Know I’d Need
Some of the most valuable moments weren’t glamorous at all.
I had a stressful day moving accommodations with a large suitcase. The metro wasn’t running, and I was nervous about using the bus for the first time. I didn’t want to get lost or hold people up because I had to carry my heavy suitcase up and down the bus.
I asked Martina, and she calmly explained everything. After meeting her, I took the bus confidently.
She helped me with timing, transportation, planning, and even safety. She checked in on me after our time together to make sure I was okay.
Why I’d Book a Greeter Again Without Hesitation
If I hadn’t booked a Greeter, my experience would have been completely different. I would have missed incredible places, felt more anxious, and spent a lot more time second-guessing myself.
Instead, I felt supported, confident, and genuinely connected to London.
Martina felt like a friend. We talked about life, not just landmarks. And she helped me see the city in a way I never could have on my own.
I would absolutely book a Greeter again. For solo trips, with friends, or even with my mom! I’m sure she would love it as well.
Final Thoughts for Women Dreaming of Their First Solo Trip
If you’re a woman thinking about traveling alone, especially for the first time overseas, feeling nervous doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you care.
Booking a Greeter didn’t take away my independence. It strengthened it.
It gave me confidence, local knowledge, and the freedom to actually enjoy my dream trip to London.
And honestly, I can’t imagine experiencing my first time in the city any other way.
